Cartoon Questions: Tory Mason chats with Robert "will" Turner
Tory: Where did the idea for Reynard City come from?
Will: The idea started when I played Sonic round my friend Ren's house- the rush of speed and colour was unlike anything I've seen. As more people have become involved, it's evolved into this surreal version of the superhero genre.
Tory: Why foxes?
Will: To be honest, a lot of fables flag up their negative qualities, but their appeal to me is their nature- they're basically survivors and live off their wits. Plus orange fur is a cool look when combined with a superhero costume.
Tory: What has been your role in the comic/cartoon?
Will: Quite simply I'd say "Writer/Producer" in that I write some of the scripts, work with the other writers and work with artistic director Dan Butcher and head animator Ana Brooke putting it together
Tory: Why make it into a cartoon?
Will: It was something I discussed with Linda Hook, Mark Margason and Lee Johnson ( Linda and Lee run Nudge Productions, while Mark Margason produces the cartoon) on the set of a gangster film called Stagger.
Reynard City has always been influenced by my childhood cartoons- X-Men, Earthworm Jim, Ninja Turtles, Batman etc. What I wanted to do was a show that merged the surreal humour of a show like Earthworm Jim with the darker themes and dynamic action of a show like X-Men or Thundercats.
Tory: Did you have to make any changes to fit it into the cartoon format?
Will: The order of events in the cartoon is different to the comic, mainly to introduce the main characters sooner and more clearly for the audience. The aim for the series though will be much the same as the comic and we'll be aiming for a big cliffhanger to keep people coming back every episode!
Tory: What sort of work was involved?
Will: To be honest, there is a lot of work, and we've been learning more and more each day. The first part was the voiceovers (as is traditional in Western animation). At the moment we're preparing a teaser trailer for interested production companies, which also serves to get the look just right.
Tory: What will the pilot feature?
Will: The pilot shows the heroes coming together after landing on Earth. As well as fighting the evil Mega Fox, they each have their own issues to deal with, whether it's AK Girl inflating on contact with caramel, or Wondervixen dealing with her inner guilt and Hyper Rob's obsessive streak.
Tory: Will you be making any more episodes?
Will: If all goes to plan, definitely. We have scripts for a six episode series and the overall arc of the comic could probably stretch to three or four.
Tory: Describe Reynard City in ten words or less
Will: The Mighty Boosh version of X-Men
